In what can only be filed under, "No duh," a recent study found men with high testosterone levels are more sexually active and more likely to cheat on their partners.

There are dozens of reasons as to why people cheat but the research does provide a little more insight into how increased levels of testosterone in men could play a role.

The study, published in The Journal of Sex Research , sheds more light into how the hormone has a different effect on the sexual behaviour of men and women.

Researchers measured testosterone in saliva samples from nearly 4,000 adults ages 18 to 74 – specifically, 1,599 men and 2,123 women – and looked at their answers to a questionnaire on sexual behaviour.

They found men with higher levels were more likely to have had more than one lover at the same time in the last five years.

In women, testosterone was significantly higher in those who had experienced a same-sex relationship. Frequent masturbation was also reported.

"Questions have been raised about the nature of sexual desire in women and how little we understand about what it is that is desired," said lead author Wendy Macdowall, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

"Testosterone's marked link with masturbation among women, in the absence of an observed link with aspects of heterosexual partnered sex, may be seen as consistent with the notion of a stronger moderating effect of social factors on hormonal influences on women's behaviour."

To put it plainly, the link between higher testosterone levels and solo sex versus sex with a partner was stronger for women than for men.

Researchers said it could be related to the "different meanings and motivations women attach to solitary and partnered sex."

Women create small amounts of testosterone in the ovaries and adrenal glands, which affects fertility and bones and muscles.

In men, the male sex hormone is mostly made in the testicles, but also in adrenal glands.

Men with low testosterone can suffer from erection problems, low sex drive, infertility, weakened muscles and bones, body fat gain and hair loss.

Too much testosterone, however, is often associated with aggression as well as an increase in prostate problems. And now, infidelity.
